Head of Department – Mrs A Haria, B.A.
The Modern Languages Department is committed to the communicative approach to MFL teaching. On entry to Year 7, pupils study French and Spanish. They are then given the opportunity to choose between French and Spanish at the end of Year 7, so that they specialise in their chosen language and take it on to GCSE. Pupils are taught in groups according to their ability. Activities linked to the curriculum are offered regularly, whether day visits, residential trips or in-school events. We offer a day trip to Lille every December for our KS3 students.
In the Sixth Form there are long-established Advanced Level courses in French and Spanish. The school employs a French and a Spanish Foreign Language Assistant who works very closely with our 6th form students, allowing them to develop their confidence and fluency in speaking. Pupils are encouraged to visit a Target Language country in order to develop their language skills further.
